BioBlitz Loreto 2024: A Success in Citizen Science and Conservation
From February 24th to 26th, #ConservaLoreto hosted the "BioBlitz Loreto 2024" event, a participatory citizen science initiative aimed at recording as many species as possible within a specific time and location.
This event, carried out in collaboration with various civil society organizations and local government, took place in two key locations: Nopoló National Park and Loreto II National Park.
For 24 continuous hours at each site, from February 24th to 25th in Loreto II National Park with the Ligüi community, and from February 26th to 27th in Nopoló National Park with the Loreto Bay community, both the general public and the scientific community actively participated in documenting nature through photography.
The results of these observations were shared on the iNaturalist platform, ensuring that the data was accessible to all interested in conservation. Our knowledge of each park increased by around 100 species each thanks to this event.
The "BioBlitz Loreto 2024" not only increased knowledge about local biodiversity but also strengthened collaboration among different stakeholders, promoting an inclusive and participatory approach to the conservation of the region's natural heritage. This event is yet another example of Conserva Loreto's commitment to preserving biodiversity in the area.
Furthermore, the recent announcement of the creation of new protected natural areas aimed at safeguarding sites of ecological importance and vulnerable species further underscores Conserva Loreto's ongoing efforts to strengthen knowledge and protection of natural areas in Loreto.
“BioBlitz Loreto 2024” has been an outstanding milestone.
It demonstrated how citizen participation and scientific collaboration can work together to achieve common conservation and environmental education goals.
