Success of the Urban Naturalist Challenge 2024 in Loreto: Discovering Local Biodiversity

From April 26th to 29th, the community of Paso Santa Cruz and Primer Agua in Loreto, Baja California Sur, enthusiastically experienced the "Urban Naturalist Challenge 2024." This exciting event invited participants to explore and document the various species of plants and animals inhabiting these wonderful places, unveiling the incredible biodiversity of the region.

During the Urban Naturalist Challenge, multiple activities were carried out to encourage the exploration and documentation of local fauna and flora.

Participants traversed streets, parks, and natural spaces, recording their observations and contributing to the understanding of local biodiversity.

One of the highlights of the event was the session at the Santa Cruz Ranches, where an introductory talk on how to use the iNaturalist application was provided. Attendees learned to document their findings and upload information to the platform, enabling effective collaboration and a greater appreciation of Loreto's natural heritage.

Additionally, an exciting nocturnal expedition was organized at the Primer Agua oasis and Rancho Saucito, allowing participants to observe the region's nocturnal fauna. During this expedition, trap cameras were set up, capturing images of deer, raccoons, and various bird species, further enriching the record of local biodiversity.

The active participation of all involved was crucial to the success of this scientific and community adventure.

This event was made possible through collaboration between civil society organizations, government agencies, and the community at large, who worked together to promote conservation and appreciation of our natural environment.

We thank all friends and participants who joined this exciting journey. The results of the Urban Naturalist Challenge are available on iNaturalist, where you can marvel at the wildlife surrounding us.
