Pitaya Monitoring: Conserving the Jewels of the Desert

From June through September, we began monitoring sweet pitayas and sour pitayas in Baja California Sur as part of a study focused on these key species, which are fundamental to the balance of desert ecosystems and an essential part of our natural heritage.

Pitaya monitoring represents a key step toward understanding, valuing, and protecting one of the most iconic and vital species of Baja California Sur’s desert ecosystems.

This study has allowed us to better understand their ecological importance, the ecosystem services they provide, and the cascading impacts caused by increasing mortality rates. Gaining this knowledge is essential for developing effective, long-term conservation strategies.

This initial effort marks an important step toward protecting regional biodiversity and strengthening our understanding of natural resources, while recognizing the vital role pitayas play in the resilience of desert ecosystems.

There are still stages of this project to be completed, and your participation can make a difference. Join this effort and help us conserve the jewels of the desert!
