“Pitayas” Photographic Exhibition
Flowers, Fruits, and Life in the Desert
Join us in discovering the natural and cultural importance of pitayas in Baja California Sur through a photographic exhibition featuring images from fieldwork conducted by Conserva Loreto in collaboration with Dr. Shane Macfarlan.
The exhibition explores the phenology, pollination, ecosystem services, culture, and conservation of the sweet pitaya (Stenocereus thurberi) and sour pitaya (Stenocereus gummosus), highlighting their life cycles, interactions with wildlife, and the traditional knowledge associated with these species.
As part of the event, Shane Macfarlan, Ph.D., will present the talk “Culture and Traditional Uses of Pitayas.”a vivendum.

Baja Rare Symposium 2026
Botany, Taxonomy, Rare Plants, and Conservation of the Flora of the Californias
The Baja Rare Symposium 2026 will bring together researchers, students, naturalists, institutions, and organizations in Loreto to share knowledge and experiences related to the flora and biodiversity of the Californias.
Over three days, the symposium will feature keynote lectures, workshops, presentations, a field expedition, and poster sessions, covering topics such as plant diversity, taxonomy, ecology, endemism, rare species, and conservation.
Baja Rare aims to strengthen the exchange of knowledge, connect those who study and protect the region’s flora, and create new opportunities for collaboration in its conservation.
