Let’s Protect the Blue Whale

Conserva Loreto supported an informational session focused on the protection of the blue whale and its habitat in Loreto. The talk brought attention to the citizen petition: “No more cruise ships in Loreto during whale season,” highlighting concerns about the impact of underwater noise on marine life.

During the session, attendees explored how large vessels, particularly cruise ships, generate underwater noise that can interfere with the natural behavior of blue whales. These animals depend on sound for essential activities such as communication, navigation, feeding, and caring for their young. Disruptions to this environment can significantly affect their well-being.

A key moment of the session was the opportunity to listen to real underwater sounds recorded in the Bahía de Loreto National Park. This immersive experience helped participants better understand how human-generated noise alters the ocean’s natural soundscape.

We extend our appreciation to Fernando Martín Velazco for leading this initiative and creating a space for dialogue and awareness around this important issue.

For those who were unable to attend, there is still an opportunity to support this effort by signing the petition and contributing to the protection of the blue whale and its habitat.
