During the 2026 Urban Nature Challenge, the Loreto community once again joined this citizen science initiative to document and learn more about the biodiversity found in our surroundings.
Thanks to the participation of 146 people, Loreto ranked 4th nationally in biodiversity documentation during the challenge, with a total of 5,590 observations and 890 species recorded.
Beyond the numbers, each observation represents an opportunity to better understand the species that share our territory and to generate information that can contribute to biodiversity research and conservation. Notably, more than 28% of the species observed are currently under some degree of research, highlighting the value of these records in expanding scientific knowledge about our region.
The Urban Nature Challenge also reminds us that science can be built through community participation. People of all ages can contribute by documenting the nature around them, strengthening their connection with the environment while generating valuable information for researchers and conservation projects.
